The Zevistic Baptism

Rite of Spiritual Initiation and Purification

The Zevistic Baptism is the rite by which a person is formally received into the spiritual family of Zeus and the Gods. It is an act of purification, consecration, and commitment. Through water, oil, fire, and the spoken Name of the God, the baptized person is cleansed of spiritual impurity, anointed as a servant of Cosmic Truth, and placed under the protection and guidance of Zeus, the Gods, and the sacred Daemons.

This rite has two forms: one for infants (performed by the parents on behalf of the child) and one for adults (performed by the individual of their own free will). Both are described below.

The Baptism may be performed by a Priest or Priestess of the Temple of Zeus, or by the parent(s) in a family setting. It may be performed at any time, though the Sabbaths and sacred festivals are especially auspicious.

Part I: The Baptism of Infants

What is Required

Preparation

The space should be clean and quiet. Light the candle and the incense. Place the bowl of water and the olive oil near the candle. The parent(s) hold the infant. If a Priest or Priestess is officiating, they stand before the family. If the parents are performing the rite themselves, one parent holds the child and the other performs the rite, or a single parent may do both.

The Rite

The Officiant speaks:

In the presence of Zeus, Father of Gods and men, King of the Gods,
In the presence of the Ancient and Original Gods and sacred Daemons,
Under the Cosmic Law of Ma'at and in the Name of Satya (सत्य), the Eternal Truth:

A new soul has entered the world. We gather to welcome this child into the family of the Gods and to place this child under the protection of Zeus.

The Officiant asks:

What name shall this child bear?

The Parent(s) speak the child's name.

The Officiant speaks:

We welcome you, [child's name], into the family of Zeus and of the Ancient Gods.

The Officiant dips their fingers in the water and touches the child's forehead, speaking:

With this water, I purify you. As the rivers of the earth flow from the mountains to the sea, carrying all that is impure to dissolution, so may every impurity be washed from your soul. You are cleansed in the Name of Zeus.

The Officiant anoints the child's forehead with olive oil, speaking:

With this oil, I consecrate you. As the sacred olive was the gift of Athena to humanity, so may wisdom, strength, and divine favor be upon you from this day forward. You are anointed in the Name of Zeus.

The Officiant raises the child toward the candle flame (at a safe distance) and speaks:

Before this flame, which is the light of Zeus, I declare that this child, [child's name], is received into the family of the Gods.

May Zeus guard this child.
May the Gods guide this child.
May the sacred Daemons protect this child.
May Ma'at be the measure of this child's life.
May Satya (सत्य), the Eternal Truth, be the path beneath this child's feet.

The Officiant then recites the Hymn of Baptism:

PRAYER OF BAPTISM

Zeus, King of the Gods, Father of all that lives,
We bring before You this child, born into Your world,
Fashioned by Your will, sustained by Your power.
Receive this child into Your protection.
Place Your hand upon this soul.
Let no false doctrine claim what is Yours.
Let no enemy of the Gods mislead this child from the path of Truth.
Grant this child strength of body, clarity of mind, and purity of soul.
As this child grows, may the Gods be known to this child,
And may this child, in time, come to know the Gods by choice and by love.

In the Name of Zeus, King of the Gods.
In the Name of the Gods and the sacred Daemons who guard the path of humanity.
Under the Law of Ma'at and in the light of Satya (सत्य).

So it is declared. So it is done.

Those present respond:

Praised be Zeus, the God of Gods, the Unconquered and Greatest, Father of Gods and Men, King of the Immortals!

The rite is concluded. Feasting and celebration should follow. The birth of a child is a blessing of the Gods, and all Zevistic births should be celebrated with joy.

When the child reaches the age of maturity, they may choose to perform the Dedication Rite of their own free will and, if they wish, to take a spiritual name.

Part II: The Baptism of Adults

The adult Baptism is for those who have already performed the Dedication Rite and wish to receive the formal sacrament of purification, anointing, and spiritual naming. It is distinct from the Dedication (which is a personal commitment) in that it is a communal rite, witnessed by others and officiated by a Priest or Priestess, or performed solemnly by the individual in the presence of the Gods.

The adult Baptism includes the taking of a spiritual name: a name chosen by the initiate to represent their identity within the spiritual tradition. This name may be Greek, Egyptian, Vedic, Norse, or from any ancient tradition honored by the Temple. It is the name by which the Gods will know you.

What is Required

Preparation

The initiate should bathe before the rite. The space should be clean, quiet, and sacred. Light the candle and the incense. Place the bowl of water and the olive oil near the candle. The initiate stands or kneels before the altar or sacred space. If no Priest or Priestess is present, the initiate may perform the rite alone, speaking both parts.

The Rite

The Officiant (or the Initiate, if alone) speaks:

In the presence of Zeus, Father of Gods and men, King of the Gods,
In the presence of the Ancient and Original Gods and the sacred Daemons,
Under the Cosmic Law of Ma'at and in the Name of Satya (सत्य), the Eternal Truth:

An Initiate of the Gods stands before the altar to receive the sacrament of purification, anointing, and naming.

The Officiant asks (or the Initiate declares):

By what name shall the Gods know you?

The Initiate speaks their chosen spiritual name.

The Officiant speaks:

We recognize you, [spiritual name], as an Initiate of Zeus and of the Ancient Gods.

The Officiant (or the Initiate) dips their fingers in the water and touches the Initiate's forehead, speaking:

With this water, I purify you. As the lustral waters of the ancient temples washed away impurity before the presence of the Gods, so is every remnant of falsehood, ignorance, and spiritual bondage washed from your soul. You are cleansed in the Name of Zeus.

The Officiant anoints the Initiate's forehead with olive oil, speaking:

With this oil, I consecrate you. As kings were anointed before the Gods to receive authority, wisdom, and divine favor, so are you anointed as a servant of the Eternal Truth. The seal of Zeus is upon you. You are consecrated in the Name of Zeus.

The Initiate faces the candle flame and the Officiant speaks:

Before this flame, which is the light of Zeus, I declare that [spiritual name] is received into the spiritual family of the Gods.

From this day, you bear two names: the name given to you by your parents, which belongs to the world of men, and the name you have chosen before the Gods, which belongs to the world of the spirit. Guard this name. It is sacred. It is yours. The Gods know you by it.

The Officiant (or the Initiate) then recites the Hymn of Baptism:

PRAYER OF BAPTISM FOR ADULTS

Zeus, King of the Gods, Father of all that lives,
I stand before You, purified and anointed,
Bearing the name I have chosen in Your presence.
I have left falsehood behind. I walk in Truth.
I have been washed in water and sealed in oil.
I stand in Your light and I do not turn away.

Receive me, Zeus, into the fullness of Your protection.
Let the Gods know my name.
Let the sacred Daemons guard my path.
Let Ma'at be the measure of my conduct.
Let Satya (सत्य) be the ground beneath my feet.

I am Yours. I am of the Gods. I walk the Eternal Path.
From this day, I carry the fire that was given to humanity at the beginning,
And I will carry it until I return to the source from which it came.

In the Name of Zeus, King of the Gods.
In the Name of the Gods and the sacred Daemons.
Under the Law of Ma'at. In the light of Satya (सत्य).

So it is declared. So it is done.

The rite is concluded. If performed in community, feasting and celebration should follow. If performed alone, the Initiate should spend time in meditation and communion with the Gods.

On the Spiritual Name

The spiritual name is a serious matter. It should be chosen with thought, study, and prayer. It may be the name of an ancient figure who embodies the qualities the Initiate aspires to, or a name from the Greek, Egyptian, or Vedic traditions that carries personal meaning. Some choose the name of a God or Goddess as a devotional act (e.g., Dioskolos, Athenais, Isidoros). Others choose a name that describes a quality of the soul they wish to cultivate (e.g., Philalethes, "Lover of Truth"). The name is spoken during the Baptism and is thereafter used in all spiritual and ritual contexts within the Temple.

If you are unsure of your spiritual name, pray to Zeus for guidance. The name will come when you are ready to receive it.
