The Brotherhood of the Snake: Teachings of Ancient Egypt

The pyramids served many purposes. One was initiation and ceremonial rites, both for humans and for the magickal workings of the Gods. Many hieroglyphics depict the Gods tuning the chakras with rod-like instruments. The Gods gave humanity these energy centres: they are the "breath of life" described in the creation texts, the spiritual technology built into the human body at the moment of its design.

The hook (heka) and the flail (nekhakha), symbols of Egyptian royal and divine authority that you see crossed over the chest of every pharaonic sarcophagus, were not merely symbols of political power. They were instruments of spiritual technology: tuning tools for the primary chakras along the spine. Murals at Abu Simbel depict Horus holding a rod to the back of Osiris' head, at the point of the 8th chakra (above the crown). The Pyramid Texts (Utterance 539) describe the awakened being in terms that leave no room for metaphorical interpretation: "Your bones are those of the divine falcons in the sky... there is no limb of yours that is without a God." The initiated body was understood as a vessel of divine energy, each point on it corresponding to a cosmic force. The process of initiation was the process of activating these points, one by one, until the entire body became a living temple.

The sexual dimension was central to this process, not peripheral. Osiris is depicted with an erection in multiple initiatory scenes. This wasn't symbolic fertility imagery. The Pyramid Texts (Utterance 632) link sexual potency directly to resurrection: "Your phallus is the pillar of the sky." The Kundalini is sexual in nature. It rises through the same channels that sexual energy uses. The Djed pillar (the backbone of Osiris, the "pillar of stability") is the spinal column through which the Kundalini ascends. The ankh (the symbol of life that appears in virtually every Egyptian temple image) represents the union of masculine and feminine principles, the integration of polar energies that produces spiritual life. The spiritual technology of the ancients was inseparable from the body's sexual energy because the body's sexual energy is the raw material of spiritual transformation. Christianity's war against sexuality is, at its root, a war against the Kundalini: an attempt to ensure that the mechanism of Godhead remains permanently dormant.

The "Brotherhood of the Snake" was the ancient priesthood dedicated to preserving and transmitting this knowledge. The serpent was their symbol because it represented the mechanism itself: the Kundalini coiled at the base of the spine, the DNA helix spiralling through every cell, the Uraeus rising on the pharaoh's brow as the sign of activated divine power. The Brotherhood existed in Egypt (the priesthood of Thoth at Hermopolis, the priesthood of Isis at Philae), in Greece (the Eleusinian and Orphic mysteries, the Pythagorean schools), in Mesopotamia (the tradition of Enki/Ea, "Lord of the Sacred Eye"), in India (the Naga tradition, the lineage of serpent-wisdom holders).

The Abrahamic religions targeted the Brotherhood specifically because the Brotherhood held the knowledge that the Abrahamic programme was designed to suppress. The serpent was recast as the enemy of God. The knowledge was branded as the original sin. The priests were killed, their temples demolished, their texts burned. The Brotherhood was driven underground, where it survived in fragments: in the Hermetic tradition, in certain Sufi orders, in the alchemical tradition of medieval Europe, in the oral lineages of the Yezidi.

The Brotherhood is being rebuilt. That's what the Temple of Zeus is. Not a continuation of one specific historical lineage (those were broken), but a reconstruction of the function the Brotherhood served: the preservation and transmission of the spiritual knowledge that makes Godhood possible. The meditation programme is the training. The Family of the Gods is the community. The serpent still rises.
