The Zevistic Wedding

The Rite of Sacred Union

The Zevistic Wedding is the rite by which two people are joined in sacred union before Zeus, Hera, and the Gods. Marriage in the ancient world was not a civil contract alone. It was a sacred act, witnessed by divine powers, blessed by the Gods of the household, and sealed with offerings. The Zevistic Wedding restores this dignity.

This rite has two forms:

Form I: The Sacred Wedding is the full ceremony, officiated by a Priest or Priestess of the Temple of Zeus, performed in the presence of witnesses and the community.

Form II: The Private Union is a simpler ceremony that can be performed by the couple themselves, without the presence of a Priest or Priestess, in the intimacy of their own sacred space before the Gods.

Both forms are valid before the Gods. The difference is in the communal witness, not in the spiritual weight.

Astrological Timing

The ritual should be performed during a waxing Moon, when the Moon is in a sign favorable for marriage. The ancients understood that the alignment of the heavens at the moment of union influences the nature and endurance of that union. Choose wisely.

Favorable Moon signs for marriage:

Avoid the Moon in: Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, and Capricorn.

Additional considerations: Venus and Mars should ideally be well-placed and in favorable degrees. Avoid planetary conjunctions with Caput Algol (25 degrees Taurus) or any planet at 9 degrees of any sign, especially Gemini or Sagittarius. Consider fixed stars when selecting an auspicious date.

Form I: The Sacred Wedding

Officiated by a Priest or Priestess of the Temple of Zeus

What is Required

Preparation

The space should be clean, beautiful, and prepared with care. The two individual candles are placed to the left and right. The central candle is placed between them, unlit. The cup of wine, the olive oil, and the incense are placed at the centre. The couple stands facing each other, with the Officiant between them. Witnesses stand around them.

The Officiant lights the incense and the two individual candles.

The Rite

The Officiant speaks the Invocation:

ΕΝ ΟΝΟΜΑΤΙ ΤΟΥ ΖΕΒ ΥΨΙΣΤΟΥ, ΠΑΤΡΟΣ ΘΕΩΝ ΤΕ ΚΑΙ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΩΝ
En Onomati tou Zev Hypsistou, Patros Theon te kai Anthropon
In the Name of Zev the Most High, Father of Gods and of Humanity

ॐ ज़ेव् देवदेवाय सत्याय नमः
Om Zev Devadevaaya Satyaaya Namah
Om! To Zev, God of Gods, the Eternal Truth, salutation!

The Officiant continues:

In the presence of Zeus, King of the Gods, Father of Gods and men,
In the presence of Hera, Queen of the Gods, Guardian of the Sacred Bond,
In the presence of Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, who kindles desire and tenderness between souls,
Before all the Gods and sacred Daemons who watch over the lives of mortals,
Under the Cosmic Law of Ma'at and in the Name of Satya (सत्य):

We gather to witness the union of two lives into one bond.

The Officiant turns to the couple:

You come before the Gods of your own free will, seeking to be joined. No force brings you here. No fear compels you. Only love, and the desire to build a life together under the eyes of the Gods.

The Officiant asks the first partner:

__________, do you, of your own free will, take __________ to be your partner in life, to love, to honor, and to stand beside in all things, in the presence of Zeus, Hera, and the Gods?

The first partner responds: "I do."

The Officiant asks the second partner:

__________, do you, of your own free will, take __________ to be your partner in life, to love, to honor, and to stand beside in all things, in the presence of Zeus, Hera, and the Gods?

The second partner responds: "I do."

The Binding of Hands (Dextrarum Iunctio)

The couple joins their right hands. The Officiant wraps the white ribbon or cord around their joined hands and speaks:

As your hands are bound, so are your lives bound. This cord is the visible sign of an invisible truth: that from this moment, you walk together. What you build, you build as one. What you endure, you endure as one. What you offer to the Gods, you offer as one household.

May Hera, who guards the sacred bond, hold this knot firm.
May Aphrodite, who lit the fire between you, keep it burning.
May Zeus, who rules all things under Heaven, bless the house you build together.

The Exchange of Rings

The cord is gently removed. The couple exchanges rings. As each places the ring on the other's hand, they speak:

With this ring, I seal my promise before the Gods. I am yours, and you are mine. This circle has no end, as our bond before the Gods has no end.

The Shared Cup

The Officiant pours wine or melikraton into the cup and offers it to the couple. Each drinks from the same cup. The Officiant speaks:

From one cup you drink. One life you share. As this wine was pressed from many grapes into one vessel, so your two lives are pressed by love and by the will of the Gods into one household. May it be sweet. May it endure.

The Lighting of the Central Candle

The couple together takes their two individual candles and lights the central candle from both flames simultaneously. The Officiant speaks:

Two flames become one. Two lives become one household. The light you carry together is greater than the light either of you carried alone. This flame is the hearth of your union, and the Gods are its witnesses.

The Officiant then recites the Prayer of Sacred Union:

PRAYER OF SACRED UNION

Zeus, King of the Gods, Lord of Heaven and Earth,
Hera, Queen of the Gods, Guardian of the Marriage Bond,
Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, who joined the first lovers in the dawn of the world:

Look upon these two who stand before You, bound by hand and by will.
They have spoken their vows. They have exchanged their rings. They have drunk from one cup.
Their flame burns as one.

Bless this union with strength, with tenderness, with loyalty, and with joy.
Let no enemy of the Gods divide what love has joined.
Let no falsehood corrupt what truth has sealed.
Let the house they build be a house of Ma'at: ordered, truthful, and alive with the presence of the Gods.

Grant them children, if they desire them. Grant them prosperity, if they pursue it. Grant them peace, which is the fruit of a life lived in alignment with Cosmic Truth.

In the Name of Zeus, King of the Gods.
In the Name of Hera, Guardian of the Bond.
In the Name of Aphrodite, who lit the flame.
Under the Law of Ma'at and in the light of Satya (सत्य).

So it is declared. So it is done.

The Officiant declares:

In the Name of Zeus, and before the Gods and all who are gathered here, I declare you united in sacred marriage. May your union be strong, fruitful, and blessed by the Gods in all things.

All present respond:

Praised be Zeus, the God of Gods, the Unconquered and Greatest, Father of Gods and Men, King of the Immortals!

The rite is concluded. Intense celebration, feasting, and joy should follow. Marriage is a blessing of the Gods and is to be celebrated with the fullness of life.

Form II: The Private Union

Performed by the couple themselves, without a Priest or Priestess

Not every couple has access to a Priest or Priestess of the Temple of Zeus. The Gods do not require institutional mediation to witness a genuine bond. If you and your partner wish to seal your union before the Gods in the privacy of your own sacred space, this simpler form is provided.

What is Required

The Rite

Light the incense and the two individual candles. Stand facing each other.

Together, the couple speaks the Invocation:

ΕΝ ΟΝΟΜΑΤΙ ΤΟΥ ΖΕΒ ΥΨΙΣΤΟΥ, ΠΑΤΡΟΣ ΘΕΩΝ ΤΕ ΚΑΙ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΩΝ
En Onomati tou Zev Hypsistou, Patros Theon te kai Anthropon

ॐ ज़ेव् देवदेवाय सत्याय नमः
Om Zev Devadevaaya Satyaaya Namah

One partner speaks:

In the presence of Zeus, Hera, and Aphrodite,
Before the Gods and sacred Daemons who watch over this moment,
Under the Law of Ma'at and in the Name of Satya (सत्य):

I, __________, of my own free will, take you, __________, as my partner in life. I will love you, honor you, and stand beside you in all things. I make this vow before the Gods.

The other partner speaks the same vow, with the names reversed.

The couple joins their right hands (Dextrarum Iunctio). One speaks:

Our hands are joined. Our lives are joined. What we build from this day, we build as one household, under the eyes of the Gods.

If exchanging rings, each places the ring on the other's hand and speaks:

With this ring, I seal my promise before the Gods.

The couple shares the cup. Each drinks. Then together they light the central candle from both individual flames.

Together they speak the Prayer of Sacred Union (the English prayer above, or the Ancient Greek version if they are able). If reading it, one partner may read the first half and the other the second half, or they may read it in unison.

They close together:

Before the Gods, we are united. Our bond is sealed. Our flame burns as one.

Praised be Zeus, the God of Gods, the Unconquered and Greatest, Father of Gods and Men, King of the Immortals!

The rite is concluded. Celebrate.

The Priestly Blessing: For Those Already Married

Couples who are already legally married, whether through civil ceremony, through another religious tradition, or through the Private Union described above, may request the formal blessing and consecration of their marriage by a High Priest or High Priestess of the Temple of Zeus.

In this ceremony, the High Priest or High Priestess performs the full Sacred Wedding rite (Form I) on behalf of the already-married couple, consecrating their existing bond before Zeus, Hera, and the Gods through specific theurgical ceremonies. Upon completion, the couple receives an official Certificate of Sacred Marriage issued by the Temple of Zeus, recognizing their union as blessed and sealed before the Gods.

This is especially meaningful for:

To request a Priestly Blessing, couples should submit their application through the Hall of Osiris website. The Temple will arrange the ceremony with a High Priest or High Priestess in coordination with the couple.
