The Body Is Sacred
The Gift of Aphrodite
The Abrahamic religions declared war on the human body. The flesh is sinful. Desire is temptation. Pleasure is a trap. The body is a prison for the soul, and the soul must escape it. 2,000 years of this doctrine have produced a civilisation ashamed of itself: ashamed of desire, ashamed of beauty, ashamed of the simple fact of being alive in a body that feels.
The Ancient Gods taught the exact opposite. The body isn't a prison. It's a temple. The instrument through which the soul experiences the world. And the world is worth experiencing.
The Athletes of Olympia
At the ancient Olympic Games, athletes competed naked. This wasn't immodesty. It was theology. The nude body, trained to perfection, was an offering to the Gods. The athlete didn't hide his body in shame. He displayed it in glory, because the body at its peak was understood to be a reflection of the divine.
Pindar, Olympian Ode 1 (97-99):
"Ὁ νικῶν δὲ λοιπὸν ἀμφὶ βίοτον ἔχει μελιτόεσσαν εὐδίαν ἀέθλων γ' ἕνεκεν."
"The victor for the rest of his life has honey-sweet calm, as far as contests can give it."
The trained body, the disciplined body, the body pushed to its limit and refined: this is an act of worship. The gymnasium (γυμνάσιον, from γυμνός, "naked") was a sacred space. Hermes and Herakles were its patron Gods. Physical culture and spiritual culture weren't separate. They were the same thing.
Aphrodite and the Sacred Erotic
Sexual desire, in the ancient world, wasn't sinful. It was a force of nature, and like all forces of nature, it came from the Gods. Aphrodite didn't merely permit desire. She sanctified it.
Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite (5.1-5):
"Μοῦσά μοι ἔννεπε ἔργα πολυχρύσου Ἀφροδίτης, Κύπριδος, ἥ τε θεοῖσιν ἐπὶ γλυκὺν ἵμερον ὦρσε καί τ' ἐδαμάσσατο φῦλα καταθνητῶν ἀνθρώπων."
"Tell me, Muse, of the works of golden Aphrodite the Cyprian, who stirs sweet desire among the Gods and overcomes the races of mortal men."
She overcomes. With desire. With the force that makes all living things reach toward each other, that makes flowers open, hearts beat faster. This force is sacred. The engine of life itself.
Sappho, the greatest lyric poet of antiquity, understood this. Fragment 16:
"Οἰ μὲν ἰππήων στρότον, οἰ δὲ πέσδων, οἰ δὲ νάων φαῖσ' ἐπὶ γᾶν μέλαιναν ἔμμεναι κάλλιστον, ἔγω δὲ κῆν' ὄττω τις ἔραται."
"Some say a host of cavalry, some of infantry, some of ships, is the most beautiful thing on the dark earth. I say it's whatever you love."
Whatever you love. The most beautiful thing in the world is what your heart reaches toward. The voice of Aphrodite telling you what matters. The Abrahamic religions taught you to distrust that voice. Sappho, Aphrodite's poet, tells you to follow it.
Lucretius, De Rerum Natura (I.1-5):
"Aeneadum genetrix, hominum divumque voluptas, alma Venus."
"Mother of the sons of Aeneas, pleasure of men and Gods, nourishing Venus."
Pleasure of men AND Gods. The divine experiences pleasure. The cosmic order is sustained by desire. The force that draws 2 people toward each other in the dark is the same force that makes the planets orbit, the flowers open, the seasons turn. To suppress it is to suppress life itself.
Zevism doesn't tell you to be ashamed of your body. It tells you to honour it. Train it. Enjoy it. Care for it. It's the vehicle of your soul and it's sacred ground.
