The Coven Initiation Ceremony
Initiation into a Coven is a bonding. From the moment it's completed, the new member's energy becomes part of the collective field: they contribute to it, they draw from it, they're woven into it. The word "family" is used deliberately. That's what this creates.
Before the Initiation
The candidate must have already performed the Dedication to Zeus. The Dedication is between the individual and the Gods. The Coven Initiation is between the individual and the group. Both commitments are permanent. The first must precede the second.
Selection must be careful. A single dishonest or unstable member can disrupt the energy of the entire group. It's always better to remain small and strong than to grow quickly and fracture. Take your time with candidates. Ask the Gods for guidance. If doubt arises, honour it.
The candidate should be known to the group before initiation. Have them attend 3 to 5 open gatherings. Let both sides evaluate the fit. Relationships formed in haste tend to be regretted at leisure.
The Ceremony
Performed within the framework of the Standard Ritual. Open the ritual normally. After the Invocation to Zeus, the initiation begins.
Step 1: Presentation. The candidate stands before the altar, facing the group. The leader speaks:
"Before Zeus, King of the Gods, and before this Coven assembled in His Name, I present [name], who seeks to join this sacred family. [Name] has dedicated their soul to Zeus and to the Gods. They come freely, with open heart and willing spirit."
Step 2: The 3 Questions. Spoken aloud. Answered aloud. The entire group bears witness.
"Do you come to this Coven of your own free will, without coercion, deception, or hidden intention?"
"I do."
"Do you swear loyalty to the members of this Coven as brothers and sisters in the Family of the Gods?"
"I swear it."
"Do you pledge to serve Zeus and the Gods through this Coven, to keep its workings in confidence, and to give your energy, your study, and your devotion to the collective good?"
"I pledge it."
Step 3: Anointing. The leader marks the candidate's forehead with olive oil:
"In the Name of Zeus, Father of Gods and Men, I welcome you into this Coven. Your energy is now part of ours. Our strength is now part of yours. You are family. The Gods bear witness."
Step 4: Welcome. Each member greets the new initiate by name. Handshake, embrace, or gesture of welcome according to the group's custom.
Step 5: Closing and feast. Close the ritual in the standard manner. Then share a meal together. Breaking bread after initiation is ancient tradition. The meal seals what the ritual opened.
After Initiation
The new member is now fully part of the Coven. They attend all gatherings, participate in all workings, and hold equal standing with every other initiated member. There are no tiers within the Coven beyond the leader.
During the first months, the leader ensures the new member is supported: assigned a mentor if helpful, encouraged to ask questions, and never allowed to feel like an outsider. A person who comes to a Coven through a genuine path has been searching for something real. When they arrive, they should feel that they've found it.
