Awareness of Sound: Instructions

By strengthening this faculty for vivid, internal listening, you fine-tune your consciousness to perceive subtle auditory information. This heightened inner hearing is the foundational skill that develops far later in your journey into potential clairaudience, or the Siddhi ability to perceive sounds beyond the physical senses.

Level 1: Listening

  1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes, or maintain a soft, unfocused gaze.
  2. Choose a piece of music or the natural ambient sounds around you.
  3. Focus your entire consciousness on the act of hearing. Listen exclusively to the sound.
  4. Do not analyze the music, name the instruments, or judge it as good or bad. Do not follow thoughts that arise from the sounds. Simply receive the pure, raw data of the sound waves as they enter your awareness.
  5. Maintain this state of undivided auditory attention for the duration of the song or for a set period.

Level 2: Recalling & Listening

  1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
  2. Select a song you know well.
  3. Your task is to listen to this song from start to finish exclusively inside your mind.
  4. You must "play" the track in your head with as much vivid detail and clarity as possible. Hear the melody, the rhythm, the harmonies, the individual instruments, and the vocals as if they were actually being played.
  5. If your attention wanders or the sound fades, gently but firmly bring your focus back and "rewind" the track to the point where you lost it. Do not proceed until the internal soundscape is as clear and continuous as you can make it.

How to know you have mastered this meditation: When you can listen a song from start to end, fully, as if you were listening it live, you have mastered this meditation.
