Awareness of Taste: Meditation

This meditation trains the mind to generate and hold the complex sensation of taste with precision, transforming a fleeting pleasure into a disciplined act of internal creation.

This heightened inner sense of taste is the foundational skill that develops your awareness of this, the ability to perceive flavors.

Level 1: Taste

  1. Select a small piece of your favorite food.
  2. Place it in your mouth and close your eyes.
  3. Focus your entire awareness on the act of tasting, for 2 minutes. Maintain the taste strongly in your mind, unwavering.
  4. Experience the flavor, texture, temperature, and aroma with undivided attention. Do not think about the food; focus on the TASTE of it.

Level 2: The Recaller

  1. After swallowing, close your eyes.
  2. Using only your memory and imagination, recreate the entire taste experience of the food in your mind.
  3. Hold this taste in your mind and don’t let it escape.
  4. For two minutes straight, hold this internally generated sensation with unwavering focus, making it as vivid and real as possible. If it fades, rebuild it until it is stable.

How to know you have mastered this: When you can recollect the taste very vividly, with textures and as if it was really in your mouth and hold this for one minute with all the material and physical effects this causes, this meditation has been conquered.
