From unity to the ordered whole

Number is a language through which unity, distinction, proportion, and completion become intelligible. In Zevist study, its sacred qualities invite the soul to contemplate the Gods and to bring measure into its own activity. The Pythagorean maxim traditionally rendered “All things are number” expresses this inheritance. Aristotle’s account of the Pythagoreans supplies an early witness to the place of number and harmony in their understanding of the cosmos; it does not preserve that sentence as a verbatim quotation of Pythagoras.
