Number, harmony, and the foundations of a sacred science
To honor Pythagoras is to approach number with the seriousness of a disciple: to count accurately, to hear proportion, to discern order, and to allow knowledge to shape the life that receives it. His inheritance joins the study of the cosmos with the cultivation of the soul. This tribute follows that numerical teaching through ancient witnesses, especially Iamblichus, and invites the reader to enter its living discipline.

The teacher and the teaching
The Temple’s Pythagoras: Master of the Seers presents the wider portrait of the teacher. Here our attention rests on the foundation he laid for the understanding of number. His greatness in this tradition lies in bringing calculation, musical harmony, geometry, the order of the heavens, and the formation of character into a common field of study. The student learns to recognize proportion both in the world and in the conduct of life.
The ancient record reaches us through witnesses and the writings of the Pythagorean tradition. Iamblichus discusses works attributed to Pythagoras and records of teachings transmitted by his disciples. We therefore identify the witness when reporting a teaching, rather than presenting later accounts as books surviving in the teacher’s own hand. This care allows the lineage to be studied in its actual richness. [1]
Number as a foundation of the cosmos
Aristotle reports that the Pythagoreans, having cultivated mathematics, understood its principles as principles of beings. They discerned numerical relationships in musical consonance and looked for comparable order throughout the heavens. In his account, number bears upon qualities, relations, and the structure of the whole. This is an early source for the Pythagorean conviction that reality possesses an intelligible numerical order. Iamblichus gives this vision its contemplative orientation. In his account of the philosophical life, the beauty of the heavens participates in a prior intelligible order, and number and formative principles pervade that order. For the Zevist reader, studying number becomes an ascent from a measured appearance to the Divine intelligibility through which it is ordered. The task asks for a trained mind and a receptive soul together. [1]
The familiar expression ‘All things are number’ names this broad inheritance. Iamblichus transmits the related maxim ‘All things accord in number’ in his account of Pythagorean wisdom. The meaning invites sustained inquiry: what is one, how does a plurality arise, what makes a relation harmonious, and how do parts belong to a whole? These questions remain the entrance to the numerical studies collected here. [1]
Unity, limit, and distinction
A multitude can be counted because its members can be distinguished as units. A figure can be understood because its boundaries and relations have determinate form. The Pythagorean study of the Monad, the even and the odd, limit and the unlimited begins with these fundamental questions. Aristotle preserves a table of paired principles associated with certain Pythagoreans, including limit and unlimited, odd and even, and one and plurality. His wording also helps us respect differences within the school. [2]
In sacred contemplation, unity gathers the mind toward its source; distinction makes relationship possible; measure gives relationship a stable order. These are fruitful approaches to the Temple’s Monad and Dyad. Their qualities should be learned before interpreting long numerical expressions. A student who knows the principles can understand a compound through its construction, rather than attaching a meaning to its written appearance alone.
The Tetractys: the first four and the complete ten
The Tetractys arranges ten points in four successive rows: one, two, three, and four. Its sum is exact: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10. Contemplation can follow the unfolding from the single point toward a complete triangular order, then return through the ordered multiplicity to the unity from which counting begins. The diagram above makes this relation visible without adding an extraneous sign.
Iamblichus records the Pythagorean oath honoring the giver of the Tetractys and the tradition’s reverence for it as a source of wisdom. The Decad gathers the first four numbers into a whole while preserving their distinct positions. In the numerical theology transmitted under Iamblichus’s name, the Decad receives a sustained account of completeness and cosmic order. [1] [3]
The first four numbers also express the familiar consonant ratios 2:1, 3:2, and 4:3. Thus the Tetractys offers a meeting place for counting, visible form, and harmonic relation. Its dignity becomes clearer through understanding each relation than through treating the diagram as an unexplained emblem.
Harmony: proportion made audible
The octave, fifth, and fourth provide a clear entrance into musical proportion. Expressed as frequency ratios, these are 2:1, 3:2, and 4:3 in just tuning. Their relationship is itself ordered: (3/2) × (4/3) = 2, so a fifth and a fourth span an octave. For otherwise comparable strings under equal tension, the corresponding sounding lengths run inversely to frequency. The arithmetic becomes audible through an instrument whose conditions are kept consistent.
Iamblichus devotes a chapter to Pythagoras and harmonic discovery. His narrative belongs to the ancient account of the teacher; its story of hammers is not a reliable experimental recipe for reproducing the ratios from hammer weights. The enduring subject is the discovery and disciplined study of proportion in consonance. The philosophical gift lies in recognizing that harmony has an intelligible structure. [4]
Within the sacred life, harmony asks the practitioner to give different powers their fitting measure. Attention, voice, intention, and action should contribute to one work without losing their distinct functions. This is a spiritual application of the relation between parts and whole, developed here from the numerical tradition.
Geometry and the discipline of demonstration
The theorem bearing Pythagoras’s name expresses an exact relation: in a right triangle, the square on the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares on the other two sides. Euclid’s Elements, Book I, proposition 47, supplies a classical demonstration. In the triangle with sides 3, 4, and 5, the equality reads 9 + 16 = 25. A figure is therefore more than an illustration; its relationships can be stated and demonstrated. [5]
The honor due to Pythagoras does not require every ancient numerical discovery to be assigned to him alone. Iamblichus himself describes the teacher as receiving, extending, and transmitting disciplines. His foundational place in the tradition concerns the ordered life of study he inspired and the integration of its sciences. Demonstration, contemplation, and teaching become forms of fidelity to that inheritance. [1]
Iamblichus and the powers of the first decade
The Theology of Arithmetic transmitted under Iamblichus’s name examines the numbers from one to ten through their mathematical forms, sacred names, relations, and powers. It preserves earlier material, including teachings associated with Nicomachus and Anatolius. Its chapters form the principal ancient reference for the individual number pages in this series. [3]
This numerical theology gives the student a method of attention: examine how a number arises, what it contains, how it divides or unites, and where its form appears within the ordered whole. A number’s qualities become intelligible through these relationships. The Temple’s own core teachings remain visible beside this ancient foundation, allowing the reader to study both the received doctrine and the particular source that informs its exposition.
Begin with one and proceed through ten. Then turn to the double digit and three digit studies, where numerical principles are considered in combination. This order of learning gives each later construction a foundation.
Honor expressed through the life of the student
The highest tribute is a patient and exact practice of the teaching. Count the points. Understand the ratio. Read the source. Let the contemplated quality enter the way a task is begun, sustained, and brought to completion. Sacred number then becomes a principle of conduct as well as an object of thought.

Each repetition receives attention; each numerical form serves a declared purpose; each completed sequence returns the practitioner to a coherent whole.
