ἈποβασκανεῖνRemoving the Evil Eye

Whispered, never aloud. No lights, no candles, no props.

author: High Priest Zevios Metathronos

  1. Sit or stand with the spine straight. Close the eyes and drop into trance.
  2. Whisper the name of the one to be cleansed, once. For oneself, the own name. See the evil eye on them as a grey film.
  3. Call Hecate. See her at a crossroads at night, a torch in each hand, the light silver-white.
  4. Whisper the prayer. The light settles on the person's head.
  5. Whisper it a second time. The light enters head, eyes, heart and limbs, and the film dissolves like a cloud under the sun.
  6. Whisper it a third time. The person stands whole inside a sphere of silver light, and it stays.
  7. Let Hecate withdraw. Open the eyes.

Whispered 3 times

1

Dhévr' Ekáti Triodhíti, faesfóre, pótnia niktós,

Come hither, Hecate of the Three Roads, bringer of light, mistress of the night,

2

ín perí pándon Zéfs Kronídhis tímise theáon;

whom Zeus, son of Kronos, honoured above all goddesses;

3

vaskaníin apélavne, kakón fthónon ómatos echthrú,

drive away the evil eye, the wicked envy of a hostile eye,

4

ek kefalís, óson te ké ek kradhíis, apó yíon;

from the head, from the eyes and from the heart, from the limbs;

5

amfí dhé i chévon fáos ámvroton, ófra saothí,

and pour about this one immortal light, so that they may be made whole,

6

Zéfs dhé tádh' ektelésie, patír andhrón te theón te.

and may Zeus accomplish these things, father of men and of Gods.

English

Come hither, Hecate of the Three Roads, bringer of light, mistress of the night, whom Zeus, son of Kronos, honoured above all goddesses; drive away the evil eye, the wicked envy of a hostile eye, from the head, from the eyes and from the heart, from the limbs; and pour about this one immortal light, so that they may be made whole, and may Zeus accomplish these things, father of men and of Gods.

Advanced Removal Steps

The evil eye is negative energy sent through the gaze. Some send it on purpose; others send it by accident, when they look upon someone with envy, jealousy, enmity or resentment. Like every negative thoughtform born of the ill will, jealousy and anger of others, it attaches to the aura and invites misfortune: accidents, illness, and a run of bad luck that can leave a person believing they are jinxed. It is also removed the way the Temple removes any such attachment. The aura is cleaned, the bond to the one who sent it is cut, what remains is banished, and the aura is sealed.

Work through the steps in order. Cleaning the aura begins at once, on any day. Detaching and banishing are done while the Moon is waning, from the Full Moon to the New Moon. Never begin a working while the Moon is void of course.

Step 1: Clean the Aura

Visualize a bright light all over yourself, then brighter still on each chakra, like a miniature Sun. Against the evil eye, perform the full cleaning: a Zevist rosary of the Sun’s mantra, SURYA or RAUM, while you see yourself engulfed in brilliant white-gold light, the vibration focused into your entire soul. Clean the aura twice a day, on waking and before sleep. If the light is hard to see at first, keep going: it grows easier as the energy builds, and the working should be repeated even past the point where you feel clear.

The full method: How to Clean Your Aura.

Step 2: Cut the Bond

Those we are close to, family above all, are attached to our aura at the chakras, and they are the ones the evil eye most often comes from: Plutarch observed that the envious harm most “their most familiar acquaintance and best beloved.” When it comes from someone close, detach them. The working is repeated every day from three days after the Full Moon until the New Moon, and in stubborn cases for 40 days or longer. It works only if you truly want to let go.

The full method: How to Detach Unwanted People/Entities from Your Aura.

Step 3: Banish What Remains

Perform the third method of the Banishing Ritual on your own aura. See your whole body within a sphere of brilliant white light and vibrate SURYA nine times, the light burning brighter with each vibration, then affirm: “I am cleansed. My aura is pure. No unwanted energy remains within me or upon me.” If your home also feels heavy, banish the space with the first method, with frankincense and a white or blue candle.

The full method: The Banishing Ritual.

Step 4: Seal the Aura

Breathe in white-gold energy, which is reflective, and with each exhalation see it shine brighter around you, like the Sun. For five breaths, affirm:

I am breathing in powerful protective energy. This energy is building an aura of protection around me. This aura protects me at all times in every way.

Do this every day. The more it is done, the stronger the protective aura becomes.

The full method: Aura Of Protection.

Step 5: Ask Zeus for Protection

Close with the Prayer to Zeus for Protection, facing North with a candle lit if you can. It may also be spoken at any moment you feel the evil eye upon you:

Let no curse, no binding, no ill will find purchase upon my soul, for I am Yours and You are my shield.

The whole prayer: Prayer to Zeus for Protection.

When It Was Sent on Purpose

An evil eye sent deliberately is a curse, and it can be returned to its sender. First clean the aura completely, then perform Returning Curses Part 1, begun while the Moon is waxing. Returning Curses Part 2 adds the power of the Sun, strongest between about 11:00 and 14:00: standing in direct sunlight while cleaning the aura can work wonders.

Removing the Evil Eye: Essentials

Clean the aura first, twice a day. The full cleaning with SURYA or RAUM lifts what has attached and shows you whether anything remains.

Cut the bond, then banish. Detach the one it came from and banish what remains, while the Moon wanes.

Seal the aura. Build the aura of protection every day, and place yourself under the protection of Zeus.

The Signs

What is within reflects in the aura, and trouble shows there before it shows in one’s life. Watch for:

  • Misfortune with no clear cause: one small accident after another, things breaking, plans failing, the sense of being jinxed.
  • Heaviness, exhaustion or illness that comes on after time spent with someone who envies or resents you.
  • An aura that looks dirty or grayish, and light that is hard to visualize when you clean it.
  • Thoughts and feelings that are not your own, or one person who keeps returning to your mind.

Not every misfortune is the evil eye; some of it is astrological, a Saturn issue for example. The daily cleaning of the aura shows you which it is, as it alerts you to negative energy and psychic attack. Children and animals are the most susceptible: Plutarch noted that a child’s soft and weak constitution is the easiest to harm with a look, while the strong and firm are not so easily affected. Clean the auras of those in your care, and of the animals close to you, as well.

Turning the Gaze Aside

The Greeks guarded against βασκανία with amulets, the προβασκάνια. Plutarch gives the reason they work: a striking image catches the envious gaze, so that it falls with less force on the one it was aimed at.

SourcePlutarch, Table Talk 5.7: Concerning Those That Are Said to Bewitch

“And therefore people imagine that those amulets that are preservative against witchcraft are likewise good and efficacious against envy; the sight by the strangeness of the spectacle being diverted, so that it cannot make so strong an impression upon the patient.”

Greek text ed. G. N. Bernardakis, 1892. Translated by William W. Goodwin, 1874.

The best known of these protective images is the Gorgon’s face, the gorgoneion, borne upon the aegis of Zeus and Athena: a face that meets the approaching gaze directly and sets a sacred boundary. See The Gorgoneion: The Protective Face.
