Observer's view, from above
Meaning
Seal of the Thunderbolt
Tradition
Yoga; the gesture of the fiery thunderbolt
Hands
Both hands, same form
Placement
Not stated; hands resting or before the body.
Associations
Earth element (stomach, spleen, pancreas); heart.

Formation

  1. Press the thumb onto one side of the middle fingernail.
  2. Press the ring finger onto the other side of the middle fingernail.
  3. Press the little finger onto the side of the ring fingernail.
  4. Extend the index finger. Form the same seal with the other hand.

Example Meditation

Form the seal with both hands and sit upright. Practise the Complete Breath and feel warmth and drive return to the body. The seal stimulates the circulation and lifts sluggishness, a useful aid when a meditation begins in tiredness.

Effects

PhysicalΣῶμα

  • Circulation. For weak circulation from blood pressure that is too low, from a weak earth element or from a weak heart. It stimulates the circulation.

EmotionalΘυμός

  • Drive. Against lack of drive and listlessness.

IntellectualΝοῦς

  • Alertness. Against dizziness and the dullness that follows weak circulation.

SoulΨυχή

  • The rising fire. In its visualization a fiery ball climbs from the pelvis up the spine to the heart, the throat and the crown.

AscentἈνάβασις

  • Κεραυνός. The vajra of Indra is the keraunos of Zeus. Zevism holds this seal as the image of the sovereign fire that wakes the soul and drives it upward.

Cautions and Variants

Caution. A lack of drive can come from extreme physical or mental fatigue; then rest is necessary, and no stimulant of any kind should be used.

Variants. Some modern sources give a different Vajra form (tips of middle, ring and little fingers to the thumb). The nail-side form is followed here.
