Meaning
Seal of Bringing Near
Tradition
Hindu and Tantric puja; third of the invocation seals
Hands
Both hands, joined fists
Placement
Before the chest, facing the altar.
Associations
Heart; the raised thumbs.

Formation

  1. Make a fist with each hand, the four fingers clenched.
  2. Bring the two fists together so they press against each other.
  3. Raise both thumbs so they stand upright on top of the fists.
  4. Hold the joined fists before the chest.

Example Meditation

With the Presence established, hold the joined fists before the chest with the thumbs upright. Breathe steadily and keep the attention near the Divine. The pressed fists bring the Presence close and keep the worshipper constant in service.

Effects

PhysicalΣῶμα

  • Firm closure. Both hands close with equal force, which steadies the arms and the posture.

EmotionalΘυμός

  • Nearness. The seal turns reverence into intimacy: the worshipper asks for nearness, not distance.

IntellectualΝοῦς

  • Constancy. The raised thumbs keep the attention upright and unbroken.

SoulΨυχή

  • Service. Nathas.org gives its sense as asking the deity to stay nearby and offering oneself to the deity's service.

AscentἈνάβασις

  • Parousia. Παρουσία is presence. The seal keeps the God present beside the soul that has called.

Cautions and Variants

Variants. Nathas.org describes the thumbs as lying on top of the fists, slightly raised in the last joint; Om Swami says to raise the thumbs.
