Heraclitus, fragment B119 (Stobaeus, Anthology 4.40.23)

ἦθος ἀνθρώπῳ δαίμων.

A person's character is their daimon.

Before You Begin

This meditation works with your own feelings. Practice when you're rested, alert and calm, in a quiet place where no one will disturb you.

If a session unsettles you, stop. You might not be ready for it yet: return to it on another day.

I. What Changes at This Level

At Level 1 you learned to call an emotion, feel it and release it. Level 2 keeps the method and adds 2 things: the emotions of strength, and imagination.

Bravery, confidence and faith in yourself carry you through a hard day, a test, a struggle. The Initiate who can call them at will has them ready when life asks for them.

The emotions you call often become the ground of your character, and Heraclitus named character a person's daimon.

II. The 3 Levels

The method is the same at every level. What changes is the emotion, and how deeply you live it in the mind.

LevelEmotionsHow They Are CalledVoid After
Level 1Positive: happiness, optimism and their kinBy name and a small memory, with little imagining5 minutes
Level 2Strength: bravery, confidence, faith in yourselfThrough a scene you imagine clearly, with you in it10 minutes
Level 3Uncertainty and the hard emotions: fear, dread and their kinThrough a strong scenario, lived with every sense15 minutes

III. The Emotions of Level 2

Choose 1 emotion for each session. Each comes with a scene to imagine; you may build your own in its place.

EmotionWhat It IsWhat to Imagine at Level 2
BraveryActing rightly while fear is present. You walk out before a full hall. Your heart beats hard. You step forward anyway, and your voice comes out clear.
ConfidenceCertainty that you can meet what comes. You sit down to a test you prepared for well. You read the first question, you know the answer, and you smile.
Faith in YourselfTrust in your own power and your own path, whatever others say.Others doubted a goal of yours. You see yourself a year from now, the goal reached, looking back at the doubt.
DeterminationThe will that keeps going until the work is done. You climb a long mountain path. Your legs are tired, and each step is taken by will alone, until the summit opens.
StrengthThe feeling of power in the body and the mind. You lift a heavy stone, set it on your shoulder and carry it up the hill, steady and unhurried.
SteadfastnessStaying firm under pressure.A storm beats against you on a cliff. You stand as a column of a temple stands, and the wind passes.
DignityThe bearing of someone who honors themselves. You walk through a crowded square, head high, calm and unhurried, and the crowd opens before you.
Pride in Your WorkRightful satisfaction in something you did well. You finish a work you labored on for months. You step back and see it whole, and it's good.
VictoryThe triumph of overcoming. You cross the line first at Olympia. The stadium roars, and the olive wreath is set on your head.
Trust in the GodsThe certainty that the Gods stand with you.At dawn you stand before the altar of Zeus. The first light touches the stone, and you feel Him beside you.

The emotions of Level 1 stay part of your practice. Return to them on the days between.

IV. The Method

  1. Settle. Sit upright with your spine straight and close your eyes. Take a few slow breaths. If you like, breathe in for 6, hold for 6 and breathe out for 6, holding only as long as is comfortable.
  2. Choose. Pick 1 emotion from the table.
  3. Summon it. Build the scene from the table, or one of your own, and step into it. Let the emotion rise from the scene.
  4. Feel it for 2 minutes. Let it fill you and observe it vividly: where it sits in the body, its warmth or weight, its pace, what it does to your breath. You feel it fully and you watch it at the same time.
  5. Let it go. Let the scene go first. Observe the emotion one last time, just as it is. Then breathe out slowly and let it go, the way a sound fades in a quiet room.
  6. Do the Void Meditation. Go straight into the Void Meditation for 10 minutes, and let the mind fall completely still.

V. How Much to Imagine

At Level 2 you imagine. Build the scene with care: the place, the light, the sounds, the air on your skin, your own body in it. See it through your own eyes, as if you're there.

Let the emotion rise from the scene. Once it's strong, let the scene thin and stay with the feeling for the rest of the 2 minutes. The scene opens the door, and the feeling is the practice.

VI. Letting Go

Release the scene first, then the feeling. Observe the emotion one last time and let it go on a long breath out. Whatever remains, the Void Meditation clears.

The strength stays with you after the feeling has passed. You're training the ability to call it again.

VII. Your Practice Week

Emotions per session1 to 32 minutes each, each let go before the next
Level 1 emotionsOn the days between, or as the first emotion of a session2 minutes each

Typical timeframe: 2 to 3 months of steady practice.

VIII. Signs You're Ready for Level 3

  • You call the emotions of strength at will. The scene brings the feeling within a minute.
  • You call them in daily life. Before a hard conversation or a test, confidence comes when you ask.
  • You let them go cleanly. The Void stays clear.
  • Your mood and sleep are steady. You've practiced Level 2 for at least 2 months.
  • You meet every condition of the warning at the head of Level 3. Read it before you begin.

Call your strength often, and it learns the way to you.
