Aratus, Phaenomena 1 to 5, tr. G. R. Mair
From Zeus let us begin; him do we mortals never leave unnamed; full of Zeus are all the streets and all the market-places of men; full is the sea and the havens thereof; always we all have need of Zeus. For we are also his offspring…
I. The First Orientation
“How Do You Begin?”
Begin with Zeus. Speak the Prayer to Zeus for Protection today, then follow the 7 days below, one short task a day.
Here is what you are about to do. You will address Zeus by name as King of the Gods, place yourself under His protection, and sit for a moment in silence. Aratus opened his poem on the heavens the same way: From Zeus let us begin.
[1]
The Temple’s prayer may be spoken during a formal ritual or alone in silence. It requires no props, no candles, no ceremony. If you can, light a candle and face North, the direction of Zeus in the ritual framework; if you can’t, speak the words wherever you are.[2] Its purpose is protection: it asks Zeus to shield the one who prays from harm, seen and unseen, and to fill them with His strength.
The Prayer to Zeus for Protection, Temple of Zeus · Read it on the Temple’s page
O Mighty Zeus, King of the Gods, by whom all things are set in order and all injustice is brought to account:
I place myself under Your protection. Comfort me and deliver me from all hindrances and snares of those who wish to harm me, both seen and unseen.
Visit justice upon those who seek my destruction. Render them powerless and defeated. Send them to trouble those who trouble me, and let their malice return upon their own heads.
Fill me with the radiance of Your power and Your glory. Give me the strength to stand firm against every attack. Let no enemy prevail against one who walks under Your protection. Let no curse, no binding, no ill will find purchase upon my soul, for I am Yours and You are my shield.
Protect me, Father Zeus, in all my goings and comings, in my waking and in my sleep, in my work and in my rest. Set Your Daemons as guardians upon my path. Let those who serve You serve also as my protectors.
I ask this in the Name of Zeus, King of the Gods, the Unconquered and Greatest.
Under the Law of Ma’at.
In the light of Satya (सत्य).
So it is declared. So it is done.
After the prayer, sit in silence. The Temple’s instruction is to visualise a powerful blue-white light around you, the protective aura of Zeus, for as long as you are able.[2] The prayer may be repeated as often as needed.
Want to understand the Gods before you pray? Read Instructions for New People first, then return here. Both orders lead to the same path.
Day 1 Whom Are You Approaching?
Read the Temple’s page on Zeus and His identities: the Father of Gods and men, and the names the civilisations gave Him. Then speak the Prayer to Zeus for Protection.
Carry forward: the Divine names, and 1 sentence, for yourself alone, on why you are beginning.
Day 2 What Does This Faith Affirm?
Read What Is Zevism? and Your Place in the Divine Family: Satya, Ma’at, divine kinship and the soul’s task of becoming like the Gods.
Carry forward: 1 positive sentence about Zevism in your own words.
Day 3 How Does Practice Work?
Read the Basic Meditation Program: the soul built floor by floor, the 3 paces and the rule of mastery. The Temple begins this programme after the commitment of dedication, so today choose the pace and the hour you will keep. The low pace is about 30 minutes a day.[3]
Carry forward: a realistic time of day and a pace you can hold.
Day 4 What Still Holds You Back?
Choose 1 question and open its answer: leaving God, whether Zevism is Satanism, Allah before Islam, leaving Allah or Deus and Zeus. Inspect its source. If fear or guilt rises, read For New Seekers.
Carry forward: 1 question answered. The rest can wait.
Day 5 How Does This Enter Your Conduct?
Read “Build Character Alongside Power” in Instructions for New People. Choose 1 virtue, such as honesty, keeping commitments, restraint, courage or justice, and practise it today in 1 concrete act.[4]
Carry forward: practice joined to character.
Day 6 Where Can You Belong?
Look at the community the Temple names: the Ancient Forums, its official forums; Vultus Templorum, its live chat; and the Library of Thoth.[4][5] Taking part in the forums means signing up there; an Anonymous Questions board keeps your account hidden from other members.[6]
Carry forward: a considered choice to join now, later, or to keep reading privately.
Day 7 What Do You Choose Now?
Reread Why Zevism, read the commitment below, then read the Rite of Dedication in full. Decide your next stage: continued learning, or dedication when you understand it.
Carry forward: a conscious decision about the next stage.
A missed day resumes at the next useful step. Delay is no failure before the Gods, and the orientation keeps no streak and no score. It introduces the existing path; it doesn’t complete the Basic Meditation Program, which has its own sequence and its own rule of mastery.
II. Days 8 to 30
The welcome doesn’t end at the first week. What follows depends on the choice you made on Day 7.
- If you have dedicated. Begin the Basic Meditation Program at the pace you chose and keep it every day. On a short day, 5 to 10 minutes is better than nothing. Open and close each day’s practice with a prayer to Zeus and the Gods, keep a written record, and once a month check yourself honestly against your programme’s checks of mastery.[3]
- If you are still learning. Keep the daily prayer and follow 1 reading route: Welcome, then Instructions for New People, Freeing the Mind from Christianity and Islam, which the Temple calls a mandatory step, and the Declaration of Principles. Make your commitment when you understand it.
- Ask your question. Bring what remains unclear to the Ancient Forums, openly or through the Anonymous Questions board.[6]
- Keep the coming festival. The Winter Solstice, the Holy Night of Zeus, gives an order of rite for celebrating alone or in a gathering; the Spring Equinox follows in March.[7][8]
Introduce the wider corpus gradually. The Library of Thoth holds PDFs, audio sermons, video teachings and further writings for the months ahead.[5]
III. The Commitment Made Intelligible
The Temple keeps 3 stages distinct.
- Introductory learning. Reading the Temple’s pages, praying, asking questions. It is open to anyone and commits you to nothing.
- Regular practice. A daily programme of meditation, prayer and study, kept at a steady pace. The Temple’s instructions begin it after dedication.[3]
- Formal dedication. The Rite of Dedication at /dedicate, by which you freely enter a relationship with Zeus and the Ancient Gods and join Their spiritual family.[9]
A click on an invitation is none of these. Dedication is a conscious act. In it you declare, freely and of your own will, before Zeus and the Gods and under Ma’at and Satya, that you become an Initiate, a son or daughter of Zeus. You renounce your former religious allegiances, dedicate yourself to Zeus, commit to live under Ma’at and Satya, and promise to honour the Gods.[9]
Know the form before you choose it. You write the prayer by hand in ink, sign your name with a very small, symbolic amount of your own blood taken with a sterilised needle, recite the prayer aloud or in your mind, and burn the paper in a candle flame. The rite is personal, unless you choose to have friends take part, and you may choose any date. It is made once and it is permanent.[9]
The Zevist Teaching
Dedication opens the path of the Theophoros, one who bears the Divine in understanding, character and action, whose objective is ὁμοίωσις θεῷ, becoming like the Gods. Zeus does not compel devotion. The commitment is carried forward through meditation, learning, prayer and honouring the Gods.
After the rite, the Temple gives 10 directions, among them: begin meditation, study the Ethics, persist in learning, pray in your own way, take part in the community, and allow your transformation to develop in its own time.[9]
IV. Family, Marriage, Children and Festivals
Choosing the Gods doesn’t require you to stop loving anyone. The Temple’s criticism falls on doctrines and institutions, never on the people raised in them: We reject these doctrines, not the people who follow them.
[10]
- Your relatives. Keep your love and respect for them. Nothing in Zevism requires a public announcement, and nobody can guarantee how another person will receive your choice. Choose your own time and your own words.
- Your marriage. Your spouse’s belief is their own. Freedom of belief is paramount, ordained by the Gods, and the Temple doesn’t force, aggressively convert or psychologically coerce.[10] Lead by example at home.
- Your children. Dedication is a declaration made
freely and of my own will
, so nobody can make it on another person’s behalf. Show children the Gods through what you live, and let the choice be theirs when it can be.[9] - Festivals. The Temple’s festival pages give rites for celebrating alone and as a gathering. Keep the day quietly, or share it with whoever chooses to join you.[7][8]
The home is where practice lives. A small shrine, a lamp and a few minutes each morning and evening give the Gods a place in the house.
V. Privacy and Support
Reading Privately
You need no registration and no public declaration to read this page or to begin. The Prayer to Zeus for Protection may be spoken alone and in silence.[2]
A private browsing window keeps pages out of that browser’s history. It doesn’t hide your activity from whoever manages the device, from the network you use, or from the services you visit. Nothing online is a promise of anonymity.
You don’t need to delete your history. Sudden visible changes can themselves attract attention, so judge by your own circumstances.
If you face a concrete threat at home, in your community or under the law, your immediate personal safety comes before displaying any religious choice. In the Temple’s words:
The Gods understand discretion.[11]
Many newcomers feel confusion, fear or guilt at first. The Temple’s counsel is patience: keep studying, keep meditating, keep asking questions, and give it time.[12] No one can set a date on which fear must vanish.
Where fear or distress becomes persistent and interferes with sleep, work or relationships, speak with a qualified counsellor, a doctor or a local support service. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services. Seeking that help sits comfortably with the path.
VI. Return Tomorrow
Everything promised here is on this page or one click from it: the prayer, the 7 days, the beginner programme, the community and the meaning of dedication. Whichever day you reached, the next one is waiting.
Give the path a place in your day. Speak to Zeus tonight, and return tomorrow.
Give the path a place in your day. Return tomorrow: the path has a next step.
